Reviews:

July 9, 1998

This is the authentic thing: Irish songs of rebellion sung by accomplished Irish musicians at the height of their careers. If you've grown up with the Irish American or Canadian American versions of these songs, you'll notice changes in some of the words - the tradition carrying on by adapting to current circumstances -- and you'll notice how the melodies and ideas have stayed the same. It has barely been the span of one lifetime when it was illegal to sing these songs in Ireland itself, though many of them grew out of Celtic rebellions of an older time. If you know these songs ("Kevin Barry," "The Wind That Shakes the Barley," "The Men of the West," for example), you'll want this classic for your collection. If you only know Irish drinking songs, this re-issue (it was first released in 1959) is still fresh enough to be the next stop in your education in Irish tradition.
