I just found a copy of the original "Rising of the Moon" in a local record store and got it for $3!!! As I look at it, I see there are also differences in the sleeve notes from the later release, in particular with the biographies. I haven't had a chance to play it, but it looks to be great in great condition ... mint minus. I never thought I'd find a copy...let alone that cheap. As soon as I have a chance I will add this info to the http://clancybrothersandtommymakem.com/.

That's great luck! I paid a lot more for my copy, but well worth it! The label on mine is a 2nd pressing. I had a 1st pressing with the leaf on it, but it was in bits when I obtained it,and I gave it to a fellow Clancy/Makem fan-friend of mine, since I already had a decent copy. I read somewhere along the way regarding this LP, that it boggled collectors for years as to the facts. I even have a quote from Tommy Makem saying that Jack Keenan played guitar on the 1956 Lp, and that was from 1975-ish! Time does that to the memory,I know for sure! The master for that is around somewhere. They should put it out in it's orginal form. Too bad all the people that were involved in it's creation are probably no longer with us.

The Balladeers site says Tommy Makem played whistle on the 1956 release. Not so, I do believe. He had just had the accident on the hand and was unable to play at his time, if I am correct. Confusing, all these details, eh? As I stated in my last post,if the powers that be would................

You are correct Spud. I had been going off the sleeve notes from the later release. The 1956 release has harmonica only...no guitar or mention of Jack Keenan...by the way. I have that wrong it TWO places... It's mentioned on the notes that Tommy plays tin whistle ... but not specifically of this LP. Thinking back, in the Clancy Bros. documentary...Paddy states that Tommy came into the his office with his hand in a sling ... and wanted to record and album. I hope to have this corrected ASAP.

Hello to the balladeer Nick! I hope I was of help to you. As I wrote before, this can be a very confusing subject, this "Rising of the Moon" LP. I couldn't believe I found the one I have and then a 2nd one, after all the years of searching. Thanks to E-Bay. Poor Tommy Makem having his hand crushed by two tons of steel. Lucky man to have come through that for the most part. Do ye all know that story? Now if we could only find a test pressing of "Live and Lusty"!!!!! Somebody has got one. There is a catalog number for it and a release date-Columbia CS 8996 August 10th 1964. Does anyone know anything more?
